Top Five Bed Bug Tips

Whether you are traveler, student or else, to get an idea where one should be extreme cautious for bed bug infestations. Probably some of you already know that bed bugs have absolutely rebounded their population numbers, and in fact they’re invading more than just houses and hotels, furniture and suitcases!

Some of the key items we can infer from the data provided through on- or offline sources, urban population centers, high volume air and mass transit travel, and that weather or climate is not really a barrier to beg bug spread and reproduction.

Bed bugs are the most difficult pest to treat, according to 76% of survey respondents, more so than cockroaches, ants, and termites. Depending on the scope of an infestation and the type of treatment used by a pest professional, it can take several treatments to completely eliminate bed bugs.

Here’s some tip on bed bug.

1. Do not bring used mattresses, beddings, stuffed sofas etc. from the backstreets
Mattresses, chairs, and sofas are the most popular infestation areas, bed bugs can crop up almost anywhere and can travel rather long distances to feed and then travel back to their breeding area.

Also, beware of used items purchased via second-hand shop and/or online, many of these items may have been purchased at a garage or estate sale etc. by folks who buy and sell items daily for a living.

2. Frequently wash bed linens
Wash your bed linens and clothing etc. that touches the floor to reduce bed bug populations. Bed bugs and their eggs can hide in laundry containers, so clean them when you do the laundry.

3. Vacuum to reduce bites
Thorough vacuuming reduces bed bug populations. Preferably on weekly basis, carefully vacuum your rugs, floors, upholstered furniture, under beds, bed frames, and all crevices around your rooms.

4. Heat-dry bed linens can kill beg bugs
High temperatures can kill bed bugs, consider heat-dry your bed linens in the sun that can work to kill bed bugs, provided it’s hot enough (at least for 3 hours).

5. Quality bed linens and beddings
When consider buying bed linens or beddings, it is better to buy quality products with hygiene function that provides highly effective protection against bacteria, odour, dust mites, and mildew etc.

Care for Your Bed Linens – Eastern Decorator Review

Buying your bed linens is just an easy task, but knowing how to care for it can be another story. It’s pretty challenging for those have never had to take care of laundry before. The following laundry care procedures are recommended to enhance your bed linens look and feel as well as extend its longevity.

General “Do Not” Guidelines
·         Do not “free pour” detergent into your washing machine. This will not only damage your linen but also the laundry equipment.
·         Do not “over load” as this will result in wrinkled your bed linens.
·         Do not “over dry” your bed linen as it will cause the sheets and pillow cases to become rough.

Laundry Guidelines for Bed Sheets and Pillow Cases
·         Separate your bed sheets / pillow cases from bathroom terry (towels).
·         Do not wash / dry your bed sheets / pillow cases with towels – because towels absorb 3 times the amount of water than bed sheets do. Thus, your bed sheets and pillow cases will be over dried and become rough.
·         Avoid over-loading your washing machine to prevent breaking long-fibers e.g. Egyptian Cotton.
·         Washing temperature should not exceed 65°C (150F) approx.
·         Drying temperature should not exceed 70°C (160F) approx. for 20 minutes.
·         Remove quickly from machine washer and dryer to eliminate wrinkles.
·         If your bed sheets / pillow cases are wrinkled in the dryer, toss in a dampened cloth and dry for 5-10 minutes longer.
·         If pre-soaking is necessary, cold water is recommended.

Laundry Guidelines for Comforters, Quilts (Duvets), Bed Skirts
·         Close all zippers before laundering.
·         Wash with mild detergent.
·         Do not use alkaline detergent, acid, chlorine bleach in either washing or drying cycles – because they can negatively impact the look and feel as well as their longevity.
·         Avoid temperatures above 50°C (120F).

Laundry Guidelines for Mattress Topper
·         Machine washing in cold water.
·         Do not bleach as it breaks down fabric fibers.
·         Use mild detergent.
·         Dry in low temperature, avoid more than 120°C (250F).
·         Do not overstuff the dryer.

Storage Guidelines
·         It’s ideal to have three bed sheet sets for a bed. For instance, you will have one on the bed, one in the storage while another one in the laundry.
·         Change your bed sheets preferably once a week in hot and humid climates e.g. Malaysia.
·         Rotate using your bed sheet sets frequently so that the three sets wear evenly.

REMEMBER: These guidelines are general. Care instructions are specific to the type of bed linens and bedding accessories that you have chosen. Hence, we recommend you to follow the care labels accordingly to ensure that you care for your bed linen in the best possible way. ;-)
